Your skin is the biggest organ of your body and it needs just as much attention and looking after as the rest of your body.

Keeping your skin top-notch will help keep it hydrated, healthy, brighter, and balanced, as well as improving some imperfections you might have. Although this can be a little tricky to keep on top of, especially when the majority of us live a busy lifestyle, your skin can do with a little extra helping hand to keep everything in check.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SKIN TYPES?

There are 5 different skin types, these are known as oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, combination skin and normal skin. Now we know that not everyone is an expert when it comes to identifying your skin type and therefore can be difficult finding the right skincare for you. Therefore, we have decided to break it down for you, so it is easier for you to digest.

So, let's first start with identifying each skin type individually before we go any further.

1. OILY SKIN:

Our skin naturally has oil on it known as sebum. It naturally comes from our pores the sebaceous glands that provide moisture. Although we all produce this oil, some of us produce a lot more of it than others. For those of us who do produce more of the oil, it can cause us some problems.

The main reason we have oil is to protect our skin, but sometimes too much oil can make your skin look shiny. Sometimes our pores can get blocked from dirt and the excess of dead skin cells which then stops the natural flow of sebum from surfacing the skin.

This is when blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples start to appear. Overproduction of the oil can cause blemishes and acne. If you are unsure on whether you may have acne or just regular pimples/spots, then it is best to get these checked by a dermatologist who can identify which one you might have.

2. DRY SKIN:

Dry skin can be caused by many reasons, it can all come down to your skin not having enough water or oil, change in climate, lifestyle changes, and even through your hereditary!

Dry skin can affect anyone at any time, you don't necessarily have dry skin all the time, some people develop dry skin that only occurs during the cold winter months or when the temperatures drop and humidity lowers. whilst others can have it all year round including those warm/hot summer months. Dry skin can be marked by scaling, itching, and cracking, which is very uncomfortable making your skin feel tight and painful at times. Therefore, it is important to keep your skin hydrated.

When you wash your face make sure the cleanser is a mild one or is designed for dry skin. Some cleansers can make your dry skin worse than before due to certain ingredients used to make the cleanser. Another tip is don't wash your face with hot water or freezing cold, but instead, try washing it with cool/lukewarm water. Hot water can make dry skin worse, making it feel tight and potentially itchy.

3. SENSITIVE SKIN:

Sensitive skin occurs when the skin is more prone to excessive dryness, flaking, flushing, irritation, and touch sensitivity. It can be caused by temporary triggers like allergies, stress, over-exfoliation, harsh ingredients in skincare or beauty products, and many more. Even if sensitive skin isn't your skin type you can develop it at any time in your life.

4. COMBINATION SKIN:

Combination skin means you have both dry and oily skin. An oily T-zone (your forehead, nose, and chin) and the dryer parts of your skin is your cheeks, both of these indicate combination skin.

The oily parts of the skin are caused by an overproduction of sebum, which leaves the skin shiny. The drier parts of your skin are caused by the lack of sebum and often leaves your skin feeling tight and sometimes becomes flaky. You can also develop sensitive skin as well in these dry areas of your skin, so it's best to keep an eye on it before it starts to give you any discomfort.

5. NORMAL SKIN:

Ok, so there are probably a few of you who are reading this and wondering what does normal skin mean? Well, there isn't any specific definition to explain what your normal skin is as at some point during your lifetime, your skin will either be dry, oily or sensitive, etc... And some people may class all of these skin types to be 'normal skin' because it is normal, it is all part of nature! - To be honest, we can see why some people would think this.

But for those of you who are wondering what is classed to be a normal skin type in the world of beauty, here is what we found. Normal skin is normally associated with individuals who have a few to no blemishes, no sensitivity, minimally visible pores, and balanced hydration levels. These individuals' skin doesn't tend to feel dry, greasy, they hardly ever breakout, and their skincare routine is generally at the very minimal to barely needing to do anything - Lucky!

HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT SKIN TYPE I HAVE?

Now that we have gone through each skin type and what they are, we can now help you find out what skin type you have.

The easiest way to determine what skin type you have is by doing a little experiment - don't worry it is very easy, nothing complicated at all.

All you have to do is see how your skin performs throughout the day, starting from in the morning up to the evening before you go to bed on a normal typical day. A little tip we recommend, write everything down on what your skin is doing during the morning, afternoon, and evening. This will help you see the results and at the end of the day work out what skin type your skin falls under.

So, let's get started. Is your skin doing any of the following?

  • Does you're skin on your face feel oily and look shiny? - Yes, then you have oily skin. No, You don't have oily skin.
  • Is your T-Zone shimmering, but the rest of your face is mostly matte? - Yes, then you have combination skin. No, then you don't have combination skin.
  • Is your skin flaky or feels tight? - Yes, then you have dry skin. No, then you don't have dry skin.
  • Do you have minimal oil, flakiness, or redness, or none at all? - Yes, then you have normal skin. No, then you don't have normal skin.
  • Is your skin itchy, red, or inflamed? - Yes, then you have sensitive skin. No, then you don't have sensitive skin.

Remember it is possible to have more than one of the above, so if you want to narrow it down to one main skin type then you can always consult with your dermatologist who then can help narrow it down to what your skin type is.
