THE NO NONSENSE GUIDE TO MEN'S SKINCARE

When it comes to skincare, the conversation often revolves around women, but men's skincare is just as important. Men's skin has unique characteristics and needs that require special attention. Understanding these differences and adopting a tailored skincare routine can lead to healthier, more resilient skin. Here's everything you need to know about men's skincare, including key facts and practical tips.

Key Facts:

Facial Hair: Regular shaving can cause irritation, razor burn and ingrown hairs. By choosing the right shaving techniques and products to prepare and support the skin, these issues can be minimised.

Thicker skin: Men's skin is approximately 20%-25% thicker than women's skin due to higher levels of collagen and elastin. This will lead to men's skin being more resistant to damage but prone to oiliness and clogged pores.

Increased sebum production: Men produce more sebum (oil) than women due to higher levels of testosterone. This can lead to oily skin and acne if not managed properly with suitable skincare products. The plus side is, that oilier skin is more resistant to wrinkles.

Higher collagen density: Men naturally have a higher collagen density, which contributes to a firmer and more youthful appearance. However, this can also make wrinkles and fine lines more pronounced when the do eventually form.

Ageing signs: While men's skin tends to age more slowly than women's, when signs of ageing do appear, the often do so more suddenly and dramatically.

"Skincare is essential to help manage these changes."

Essential skincare routine for men

1. Cleansing

Removing dirt, oil and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Use a gentle cleanser containing Salicylic Acid to help cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin, will help with oiliness, but also ingrown hairs.

2. Moisturise

Keep the skin hydrated and keep the protective barrier intact. Use a moisturiser suitable for your skin type. By using a day cream that is full of antioxidants and peptides you will protect, repair and brighten the skin. For oily skin, opt for a lightweight Hyaluronic Acid serum instead of a heavier day or night cream.

3. Sun Protection:

UV damage can cause premature ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. By using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen everyday, even on cloudy days, you will protect your valuable collagen and elastin fibres and reduce your risk of melanomas or other sun damage.

4. Targeted Treatment:

Address specific skin concerns such as acne, dark spots, wrinkles or sensitivity by using a night cream or targeted serum to help repair damage and reverse the skin's cellular health.

It is important to understand the unique characteristics of men's skin and adopting a tailored skincare routine. You may suffer from oiliness that will need a different approach than when you suffer from eczema or even breakouts. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Adopting a consistent, tailored routine can lead to significant improvement in skin health and appearance.
